Washing

from Inside Outside by Karen Hunter

about

Recorded live at the Arc, Dunedin New Zealand in 1999 with the band Afghani Stan. We created a show of poetry and music together and this was one of the songs we collaborated on in the final set.

The Arc was such a great venue!

Washing is about hard feelings : guilt, anxiety, pain - I am putting these strange moods into a cinematic backdrop - you are the actor, you are running from the scene of the crime on a wild west coast beach - your heart lies on the sand, you are the victim as well as the perpetrator....

Try not to think to literally about it :-) It's totally abstract - and its one of my favourites

lyrics

I wandered along a lonely beach
My mind was in the sky
So rich and blue
White and shiny pictures
Heat breaks my mental image of you

A green and grey wall
Rises up 50 feet tall
Covered in slime
I can't scrape it off

Look to the left ( all alone )
Look to the right ( don't look now you're on your own )

Running through the sand with a knife in my hand
Grass like needles that cut my feet

If I say it out loud will it go away?

It's like thick red guilt, it feels so hard in my heart
It feels so hard in my heart

Washing it all away......
